Sales of new cars decreased by 292 thousand in January compared to last year. . The smallest decline was seen in Sweden (22.5%) while sales in Romania dropped the most (-51.9%). Volkswagen Group sold the most cars in January 2021 in Europe, some 214 thousand vehicles representing 25.4% of the European market.

In January, most vehicles (170 thousand) were sold in Germany (down 31.1% yoy), followed by Italy (134 thousand, down 13.8%), France with 126 thousand cars (down 5.85%), 90.2 thousand new vehicles were registered in the United Kingdom (down 39.5%) and 42.0 thousand in Spain (down 51.5%). The five largest countries accounted for 61.7% of total new vehicles registered in January 2021.

In relative terms, sales in Sweden (+22.5%) and Norway (+7.74%) declined the least compared to a year ago, whereas registration in Romania and Spain dropped the most (-51.9% and -51.5% yoy), in January 2021, according to ACEA.

Volkswagen Group sold the most cars in January 2021 in Europe, some 214 thousand vehicles representing 25.4% of the European market. Sales of PSA Group amounted to 129 thousand vehicles (or 15.4% of the market) while Renault Group and BMW Group held 9.20% and 7.60% of the European market in January. Overall, the five largest manufacturers sold 65.0% of all new cars in January.
