Total coal consumption rose 6.06% to 17,927 kt in Dem. People's Republic of Korea in 2015, according to the National Statistical Office.

Historically, total coal consumption in Dem. People's Republic of Korea reached an all time high of 71,309 kt in 1988 and an all time low of 14,663 kt in 2013. When compared to Dem. People's Republic of Korea's main peers, total coal consumption in China amounted to 4,376,326 kt, 210,734 kt in Japan, 146,301 kt in South Korea and 41,650 kt in Vietnam in 2015.
