Historically, total coal consumption in China reached an all time high of 4,678,490 kt in 2013 and an all time low of 678,511 kt in 1980. When compared to China's main peers, total coal consumption in India amounted to 879,608 kt, 210,734 kt in Japan, 228,176 kt in Russia and 798,155 kt in USA in 2015.
