Historically, population in cities of more than 1 million as a share of population in China reached an all time high of 32.0% in 2024 and an all time low of 7.73% in 1974. When compared to China's main peers, population in cities of more than 1 million as a share of population in India amounted to 16.7%, 65.4% in Japan, 23.9% in Russia and 46.8% in USA in 2024.
