Population in cities of more than 1 million as a share of population rose 2.01% to 13.9% in Tanzania in 2024, according to the National Statistical Office.

Historically, population in cities of more than 1 million as a share of population in Tanzania reached an all time high of 13.9% in 2024 and an all time low of 1.88% in 1960. When compared to Tanzania's main peers, population in cities of more than 1 million as a share of population in Kenya amounted to 12.5%, 8.98% in Mozambique, 8.10% in Uganda and 15.6% in Zambia in 2024.
