Population in cities of more than 1 million as a share of population rose 1.79% to 6.16% in Malawi in 2024, according to the National Statistical Office.

Historically, population in cities of more than 1 million as a share of population in Malawi reached an all time high of 6.16% in 2024 and an all time low of 0.292% in 1960. When compared to Malawi's main peers, population in cities of more than 1 million as a share of population in Mozambique amounted to 8.98%, 35.9% in South Africa, 13.9% in Tanzania and 15.6% in Zambia in 2024.
